Vehicle Insurance and Montana Registration
A common question from clients registering their vehicle in Montana is how registration state affects insurance. The short answer: insurance is based on where your vehicle is garaged, not where it is registered.
Registering your vehicle in Montana does not require you to carry Montana auto insurance. Your vehicle should be insured in the state where it is primarily kept and driven. Montana plates on your vehicle do not change your insurance state or rates in most cases.
How to Insure a Montana-Registered Vehicle
Tell Your Current Insurer
When you receive Montana plates, inform your current insurance provider. Most insurers are familiar with Montana registrations, especially for RVs, and can continue your existing policy without issue. Request that your policy documents reflect your Montana registration.
For Montana LLCs
If your vehicle is registered under a Montana LLC, your insurer should know the vehicle is owned by the LLC. Most personal auto policies can accommodate LLC-owned vehicles, but some insurers require a commercial or specialty policy for LLC-titled vehicles. Ask your broker about "personal use" endorsements if needed.
For RVs
RV insurance is typically a specialty product separate from standard auto insurance. RV insurers are very familiar with Montana registration and generally don't require any policy changes when you register in Montana.
For Exotic and High-Value Vehicles
Specialty vehicle insurers — Hagerty, Grundy, American Collectors, AIG Private Client — all have significant experience with Montana-registered vehicles, especially those held in Montana LLCs. Contact your broker before switching plates to confirm continuity of coverage.
Montana Minimum Insurance Requirements
If you are actually domiciled in Montana and driving primarily within Montana, state law requires the following minimum liability coverage:
- $25,000 bodily injury liability per person
- $50,000 bodily injury liability per accident
- $20,000 property damage liability per accident
Most insurers recommend coverage significantly above these minimums for adequate protection. These minimums apply to vehicles operated in Montana — not necessarily to all Montana-registered vehicles operated primarily in other states.
